What is the difference between green and blue runs

Les Deux Alpes is a great resort to find your snow legs. Complete beginners start on the nursery slopes right down in the town and after mastering the basics, move on to the easily accessible, higher altitude beginner areas. Not only are there lovely views across the valley, but the run has a great mix of straights and turns, with a wide straight section at the end where you can really let go! The altitude means that the snow is better than some of the lower areas and the views will take your breath away!

Belle Plagne is one of 10 villages that make up La Plagne and is a fantastic resort for a first ski holiday. These areas are on easy, wide runs with special signs to make sure you stay on the right track.

Our favourite blue runs — Arpette and Dunes: From the top, there are a number of different blues that will take you back to Belle Plagne, any of which will put a big smile on your face. Maybe don't try this on day one though! Les Menuires is very family-friendly which makes it a great place for children to take their first turns on the snow. There are also some lovely runs for beginners who are already blue-run confident and want to push themselves a little bit further.

Blue runs are not for first or second-day skiers. They are for early to middle intermediate skiers. Skiers who can at least make wedged turns left and right and are ready to practice on steeper terrain.

Skiers should move from the green slope to the blue slope, only once they can stop on their left and right side. In Europe blue runs are on average less steep than North American blues. Although each resort and country has slightly different grades, these are approximate averages for how steep blue slopes are:. Bear in mind that grading is done by the resort and are relative to other slopes within the resort.

There is no independent standard and skiers should assume a range of difficulty from one blue to the next. Even the same blue slope in different snow conditions will dramatically affect the skiing difficulty. One day it may have fresh powder and the next it will be icy and full of moguls. The best way to ski blue runs is with parallel skiing.

You must do the opposite, lean slightly forward and downhill and commit wholeheartedly to each turn by leaning your hips downhill. You could be skiing a blue run on your third day of skiing. A word of advice is to go with someone familiar with the terrain as there are a number of cliffs and it is not hard to get cliffed out. Now that you know the best runs of each difficulty and the color system, there should be nothing stopping you from experiencing the slopes! Want the chance to try out your new knowledge of Whistler?

To be an expert skier, proficient athlete, or successful executive takes the ability to focus on the present moment. Whether you take a private ski lesson or hit the slopes with friends who are faster and more advanced, challenging yourself is critical to your growth.

When I first started sparring in boxing, I worked quite a bit with a professional fighter about my size. He gave me a bloody nose every week for six straight months. Two other things happened: the cartilage in my nose got tougher and I got better.

Either way, the bleeding stopped after six months. My brother spent several weeks in a hospital brain trauma ward for an issue unrelated to skiing.

One of the nurses asked me if I wore a helmet riding a bike or when I was skiing. Whatever sport or activity you do, if there is an equivalent to a helmet, wear one. While there are no sure things, safety does wonders for your confidence, and confidence does wonders for your performance. Like life itself, alpine sports come down to balance, both literally and figuratively. Striking the right balance can be tricky, but finding your ways down or up the mountain relies on your willingness to try a new and more challenging run.
