Overfilling the gas tank can cause liquid gas to enter the charcoal canister, or carbon filter, which is designed only for vapor. Gas in the system can affect your car's performance by causing it to run poorly, and damage the engine, he says.
Originally Answered: When is it best to refill a tank of gas? You should fill up whenever you feel like it, as long as you don't run the vehicle often with less than a couple gallons in the tank. The statements about running low and siphoning crap off the bottom of the tank aren't really applicable to modern day cars.
How does a petrol pump pump work? Category: automotive road side assistance. Petrol is pumped along a pipe from the tank and mixed with air in the carburettor , from which the engine sucks in the mixture. In the fuel -injection system, used on some engines, the petrol and air are mixed in the inlet manifold. A fuel pump draws petrol out of the tank through a pipe to the carburettor.

There is no end to greed but if you trust a particular pump, continue visiting the same place. I have reported all the facts as they were told to me. Calculations are indicative. The following BHPians Thank aplang1 for this useful post:. Pressure or no pressure there no reason why a customer has to be shortchanged.
I pay for 1 litre I should get ml and not a ml less than that. I may be wrong here but the tone of this article approves the pump owners shortchanging of customers. Thanks for sharing. And thank you for reporting facts honestly. Though what I take from it - nobody is fooled as handsomely as the ultimate customer! Please don't take this personally. View My Garage. Sadly - its us, the customers, who end up paying for the overall loses and corruption prevailing in the industry.

Even if you gave the customer ml to the litre, the customer also subsequently loses some fuel due to this evaporation, doesn't he?
Every business has its own risks and rewards. Short-changing an unsuspecting customer is not acceptable, no matter what. Also, are you communicating that even the most trusted vendor recalibrates his meter to dipense ml to the litre? But despite all these facts many people are willing to start new fuel pumps.
If the profits are only like what you said i dont think people will be interested. Many of the pumps have land in the prime location by main road side they easily can do other business than this or simply leasing or rent out the land will give more income. So i believe either the customer is fooled more, may be by dispensing less than that mentioned here or they have more income for liter of fuel sold. Interesting to note how the fuel dealer first gets cheated which results in the end consumer getting cheated.
The only bright side I see here is that our cars give better FE than we think they do. The following 14 BHPians Thank superutp for this useful post: amitcd, Cayman, espraveen, Godzilla, kaveman, mallumowgli, pachchu77, Parthasarathig, samaspire, sanjeevskartha, SmartCat, supremoo, swarnava.
As gasoline enters the tank, air begins to exit it. Gas pumps stop when there is no more air flowing through the nozzle and the change in air pressure causes the nozzle valve to shut automatically. Does a gas pump automatically stop when the tank is full?
Gas pumps are mechanically designed to automatically stop pumping gas as soon as the tank is full. The nozzle valve shuts automatically once the gasoline blocks the air in the Venturi tube. How do you know when your gas tank is full? If you're planning to fill your fuel tank all the way, you will know the tank is full when you hear a sound indicating that the valve shut off. At this point, you will no longer be able to fill your tank any further.
How does a gas pump nozzle work? From there, it sends it up the fuel line and into the fuel rail where it can be injected into a cylinder. It then mixes with air and a spark to create combustion. There's a filter on the end of your pump that keeps any impurities in your tank from entering the fuel line. Additionally, there's a fuel float which literally floats on top of your fuel. This float has an arm attached to it that sends a signal through an electrical board.
This resistance is read by your fuel gauge and tells you how much fuel is left in your tank. There's also another electrical resistor that is submerged, but when it's exposed to the air it knows you're very low on gas and tells your Low Fuel Warning light to illuminate.
For those of you with older vehicles and mechanical fuel pumps, the process is a bit different. Your fuel pump in that situation has a pump lever that moves up and down as the camshaft spins.
