How long turbo cool down

However, it stands to reason that with more and more BMWs being turbocharged with the new models that this "problem", if it existed, has been nullified, otherwise the handbook would warn you of dire consequences if you didn't idle the engine and of course it doesn't. Furthermore, BMW would be anxiously awaiting warranty claims from drivers who didn't do this and damaged the bearings.

But it simply won't happen as the idling "requirement" is bollocks. Still, do what yo want to do. Originally Posted by Reggie-g Lieutenant General. Exactly Pete, unless you live or work at the end of a runway, you will have to slow down before you park up, possibly do some low speed manouvring to park etc. Even from idle speeds as the N54 boosts at idle , the turbo will stop almost instantly when the exhaust gases stop, as it has so little mass. Turbo cool down time Please can somebody tell me how long I need to keep the engine running to allow the turbos to cool down?

Like the feed comes from a lower area than the discharge, so thermal dynamics would make it circulate after then engine is off. Just don't beat on your car while your looking for a parking spot.

DSMopar Proven Member. Seriously doubt that's the original belt I use my alarm as a TT. I set a time for the car to continue running, when the timer completes- it goes off. Since i have to drive 25mph for about 3 min to get to my house, i turn it off as soon as i get there since i figured that i was driving at like 2k rpm so it should be cool. I don't really think a TT is neccary unless your at the drag strip making hard pulls right before shut off.

But to those that want one for function and not looks, Omega makes a cheap one that gets the job done. Forget the price but I think AMS sells them. And you gotta think thats an old original turbo from the 80's which is not nearly as efficient as today's or even the orginal dsm turbo's of the 90's.

In the dark ages of turbocharging, all turbos were cooled by oil only. Without a water jacket cooling the turbo, the oil would get hot and "coke" up the bearings. Somewhere around the mid 80's manufacturers started adding water cooling to their turbos. In just about any condition you can think of while street driving, the water cooling keeps the turbo from ever reaching temperatures that will cause the oil to coke, especially if you're running good oil. Question Bad idle after partial cool down. Remember the engine is cooled by the cooling system. The Turbo on the other hand is not cooled as such. The turbo is designed to be part of the hot exhaust system and so is very durable to heat. Lisa RAY: When the dealer told you to run it for 15 seconds, I think he meant you should only drive it for 15 seconds. That would be the best way to preserve the turbo. TOM: What we have here is another anti-turbo argument.

Don't you feel stupid trying to look busy for 15 seconds while the turbo cools down
