The downtown area also houses a variety of restaurants, as well as Unity Theatre , the only professional theatre in the region. An array of colorful murals on downtown buildings has inspired BrenhamArtWalk , and the number of National Register markers on these same buildings has generated a self-guided Historic District Walking Tour.
West of Brenham on Hwy. In spite of its small size, Burton is home to the restored Texas Cotton Gin Museum which attracts thousands of tourists each year. The annual Cotton Gin Festival takes place the third weekend in April. Chappell Hill was founded in and prospered in the early days, becoming a popular stagecoach stop. The next courthouse, built in , is pictured below. E Pennington, new citizens arrived, new houses were constructed, and the small town became a thriving business center.
High-quality cotton, corn, and cattle were being raised in the area, and factories were producing many items that were in high demand, but it could take weeks, or even months, to deliver products to waiting markets.
This dilemma was solved when locals took the matter into their own hands. Led by local attorney and community leader J. Giddings, the Washington County Railroad was established and completed in Jewish residents founded an Orthodox congregation in Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church , St. Mary's Catholic Church , the German Methodist Church , and the Presbyterian church were formed as a result of European immigration.
From to the German-language Texas Volksbote was published in Brenham. Brenham has served as a regional educational center since Reconstruction, when a large freedmen's school was established there. In the town began operating the first tax-supported school system in Texas, including a school for Blacks. One of six Texas school systems to receive Peabody Funds, Brenham schools achieved a reputation as one of the state's best educational organizations.

Proceeds were donated to build a public swimming pool, which remained opened until the late 's. The Fire Department started another important tradition here when it held the first County Fair in The hurricane of , which destroyed City Hall, also caused extensive damage to the Silsby Steamer. The steamer fought its last fire at the Wangermann-Reichardt Warehouse in In , the decision was made to disband the original fire companies and merge into one - Brenham Fire Company No.
It was allegedly the second motorized fire truck in Texas - Waco had the first pumper truck. In January , the City Council ordered the truck to be housed at City Hall and hired the first two paid firefighters. Affectionately known as Samanthe, it was one of only 31 types of this fire truck ever built by the company. BFD owns the only one left with its original engine.
On a early Saturday afternoon in , an alarm was sounded for a structure fire at the corner of Main and Chappell Hill Streets. Along with two other engines, Samanthe responded - it was to be her last fire. At the conclusion of her active duty, the Fire Department kept Samanthe and in funds were raised to have her restored to her original condition. Shortly after this fire the City purchased several lots on the east side of town, and built a new station with six truck bays in
